A recently completed Cape Town project by Sumari Krige, this Camps Bay home demonstrates La Grange’s commitment to style that’s liveable and comfortable.
Cleverly designed by (architect) to operate on various levels and in various ways (as a holiday home when the international owners are in town and as an Airbnb when the house sectioned into various self-contained entities), this home’s interiors are contemporary with a strong African sensibility.
We recently shot the space with photographer Elsa Young. Come with us on a behind the scenes look at what goes into capturing an interior project.

Finding angles – sometimes it takes a little lateral thinking to capture a space.
Options, options, options…
Stylist Fergus Armstrong and Sumari always bring a host of different pieces along to shoot to style and dress up spaces. Refreshing decorative vessels, soft furnishings and flowers is the most immediately impactful way to bring a space to life. In this case the house was fully furnished by Sumari on completion of the project – down to decorative accessories – so she simply brought a selection of vases to display fresh flowers and foliage.
La Grange has a huge range of beautifully crafted glassware, ceramics and pottery items. Many of these are also one of a kind. Have a look at the range here.

Catching the light just right
Each aspect of the house is oriented towards the sun differently, and so the lighting can be dramatically different in two parts of the house despite it being the same time of the day. To work with the light, the shoot has to be timed so that each section is captured at its most optimal.
For the outdoors this is typically morning and late afternoon, when the light is less bright. While an ideal time for sunbathing, midday is considered a little hot for photography. This outdoor area features beautiful low-maintenance meadow-style landscaping by Franchesca Watson. The loungers and outdoor furniture used on this relaxing terrace all come from Gommaire’s extensive outdoor range – La Grange is the exclusive stockist for Gommaire in South Africa.

The finishing touches
In this home, layers take the spaces from accomplished to comfortable as well. This is done through beautifully curated soft furnishings and decorative accessories – throws, cushions, rugs. This (along with art) is the defining layer of furnishing that gives a space its soul and personality.
For this project, Sumari has chosen striking graphic pieces in strong colours and bold patterns to give the end result a sophisticated African feel. Explore the website further to find unique pieces to elevate your spaces.
