Let there be light – creative ways to illuminate

Lighting isn’t simply functional – it performs a whole range of roles beyond simply illuminating a space. From setting a mood, to highlighting certain features, it’s a powerful tool to create ambience and direct the gaze strategically.

Lighting comes under three primary categories: task (functional), ambient (foundational) and accent (highlights). Combining these will form the basis of a strong lighting design plan.

Incorporating lighting as a design element from the outset, rather than an afterthought is key – this way it becomes part of the scheme and works with your design seamlessly to enhance it. When you can balance dramatic and emotive effects of lighting with practical functionality then you’ll benefit from the full impact of a smart lighting scheme.

Geometry class – all the right angles

Geometrically inspired pendants can provide a striking focal point in the space, centering and grounding everything around them. That add structure and an architectural element that pulls a space together. Especially if the items around it are organic, soft and rounded – then a piece with strong lines will create balance beautifully.

group effort – pendants en masse

The easiest way to create instant drama with lighting is by grouping pendants – above a table, in a stairwell, in your entrance hall. It not only serves the purpose of lighting but it doubles as an art installation when multiple pieces are hung together. You can take a few approaches here – grouping similar pieces in different sizes, or mixing them up. The former will give a cleaner, more modern look, while the latter is quirkier and more eclectic.

small but mighty – the sconce

While predominantly a task lighting role – by lighting up a passage or serving as a reading light by a bed or in a seating nook – wall sconces are decorative in their own right and do double duty as beautiful wall features.

Sconces in metallic finishes are especially effective in elevating the glamour and sophistication levels in a room – they give a particularly nice glow and pop beautifully against dark colours. We have a beautiful range of wall light to suit different styles.

Standing tall with statement floor lamps

A strong standing lamp is a great framing device in a seating area. Positioned adjacent to sofas or armchairs, they add interest at different level and cast a warm glow over the space from above.

As they’re so visible and present, they’re also a good opportunity to introduce specific style elements and define the personality of the space. Whether rustic and beachy, or minimal and modern, their size and stature give them a lot of influence over the general feeling of the room.
